The Irish Horse Board (IHB) maintains the Kerry Bog Pony Studbook on behalf of the Kerry Bog Pony Co-operative Society Ltd.
Foals
The following registration procedure will be followed for foals eligible for entry in the studbook:
- A covering certificate is sent by the stallion owner to the IHB.
- The IHB sends a marking chart and a DNA kit to the mare owner.
- The owner's vet inserts an Irish Horse Register issued microchip, records the microchip number on the marking chart, records the markings of the foal, and takes hair samples for DNA parentage testing.
- The marking chart is returned to the IHB and the hair samples are sent to Weatherbys' laboratory for testing.
- When the parentage results are confirmed by Weatherbys' to the IHB the passport will be issued by the IHB to the foal owner on payment of the appropriate fee and on provision of evidence of up-to-date membership of KBP Co-op.
Adult Animals
1. To register an animal without pedigree which has passed inspection under the derogation:
- Owners' vet completes a marking chart issued by the Irish Horse Board.
- Vet inserts an IHB issued microchip. The microchip number is recorded on the marking chart
- ompleted marking chart is returned to the IHB who issues the passport on payment of the appropriate fee and on provision of evidence of up-to-date membership of KBP Co-op.
2. To register an animal with full or partial pedigree:
- DNA kit is obtained from Weatherbys Ireland for parentage testing
- Owners' vet takes the DNA samples, the markings of the pony and inserts an IHB issued microchip
- owner sends the DNA samples to Weatherbys, who return the results of the parentage test directly to the owner
- owner then sends the parentage results from Weatherbys, the marking chart (with the microchip number recorded), and covering certificate from the stallion owner to the KBP Co-op to have a record of details and to have compliance with Co-op membership. The Co-op forwards all original documentation to the IHB who issue the passport with the appropriate fee.
3. To register an animal with original 'black cover' pedigree information documents (original foundation stock and their descendants):
- Animal must be re-marked by the owners' vet to ensure that there is a current marking sheet (that is, prepared during previous 6 months). The vet will also insert an IHB microchip (if there is not already one inserted).
- Owner then sends the marking chart with the microchip number recorded thereon to the IHB who will issue the new passport on provision of evidence of up-to-date membership of KBP Co-op.
- Pedigree information on these animals has already been confirmed by Weatherbys so it is not necessary for the owner to DNA type these animals.
- Animals will be registered in Class 4 of the main studbook. If they are presented for inspection they will be re-classified in the appropriate class.
Mares, Geldings and Stallions
Within each Class of the Studbook there shall be three subdivisions - one each for mares, for geldings and for stallions.
Suspect Pedigrees or Misrepresentation of Records
All animals with pedigree recorded will be DNA typed. In the event of an animal not having its parentage verified, the management committee may then decide to have all animals proposed for registration by the breeder blood typed or DNA profiled for a period of two years. Costs to be borne by the owner.
Transfer of Ownership
The IHB and the Kerry Bog Pony Co-op must be informed when an animal is sold or transferred to a new owner. The passport for the pony in question, the name and address of the new owner, and the relevant fee must be sent to the IHB to have the change of ownership registered. The IHB returns the passport to the new owner.
Naming
It has become traditional to assign names having bog associations to Kerry Bog Pony foals. That tradition is encouraged by the Society. A list of names for future use will be drawn up and printed copies will be made available for owner/breeders. Duplication of names is not permitted. The name given to any particular animal must be entered as part of the Registration details. A Prefix or Suffix name may be registered with the IHB by an owner/breeder for the appropriate fee.
